These intensive workshops will provide the opportunity for traditional music players to develop new skills.
Internationally recognised traditional musicians Liz Doherty, Laoise Kelly, Desi Wilkinson and Dinny McLaughlin will conduct four workshops on fiddle, harp, flute and mixed instruments.
At the end of the day the tutors will perform a few tunes together and then all the participants can practice what they have learned in a short all-together session.
Liz Doherty (Fiddle)
Liz Doherty will teach a fiddle workshop for intermediate to advanced
players. This will include tunes from the Irish tradition (particularly Donegal) and from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia as well as tips on technique and performance style.
A renowned fiddle player from Buncrana, Co. Donegal and lecturer in traditional music at the University of Ulster Liz has recorded and toured with a number of bands including Bumblebees and Fiddlesticks. She has also
released two solo albums to critical acclaim, Last Orders and Quare Imagination. As a fiddle teacher she is in great demand and has taught throughout Ireland and the U.K., Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
Dinny McLaughlin (Mixed instruments)
Dinny McLaughlin will lead a beginners' workshop in mixed instruments.
This offers beginners in any instrument the chance to learn a simple tune or two.
Even if you have never played before come along and have a go!
Dinny McLaughlin from Buncrana, Co. Donegal, is one of the great masters of traditional music. A virtuossic fiddle player, he is also a talented performer on many instruments including whistle, flute, piano and
accordion, besides being a singer and a champion dancer. He toured for many years with the renowned band Aileach, and released his first solo CD Play it By Ear in 2001. Dinny is one of the great teachers of traditional music and dance and has produced many top-class students (many of them all-Ireland champions) over the years.
Laoise Kelly (Harp)
Laoise Kelly will teach a workshop on harp for intermediate to advanced levels.
Laoise is a brilliant harp player from Westport in Co. Mayo. She first came to national attention through her performances on the TV series The River of Sound and has gone on to perform and record with numerous artists including Sinead O'Connor, Bill Whelan, Sharon Shannon, Steve Cooney, and
Desi Wilkinson (Flute)
Desi Wilkinson will teach a flute workshop in the traditional idiom for intermediate to advanced fluters.
Well-known flute virtuoso and singer Desi Wilkinson is one of Ireland's finest traditional musicians. He is also a respected teacher of traditional music much in demand in Ireland and abroad. He has received great acclaim both as a solo artist and for his collaborative work with the
internationally known group Cran and many other artists. Desi's second solo album Shady Woods was released in 2002 to great critical acclaim.
